Registered Volunteers
What is a Registered Volunteer?
- Registered volunteers are people interested in making an ongoing volunteer commitment at the Kerr Street Mission.
- These individuals go through KSMs onboarding process and join our team to perform a specific role, or act as floater volunteer who signs up for roles on a week to week basis.
- Registered volunteers are vital to the ongoing operations of KSM and represent the vast majority of people who support our organization.
Time Commitment:
- This depends on the role but the average time commitment is 2 hours per week for a minimum of 3-6 months.

Onboarding Process:
Our organization serves a vulnerable population and as a result we need to select our volunteers carefully. Unfortunately, not everyone who applies for a volunteer role will be accepted.
Our application/screening process includes:
- Brief virtual interview with the Volunteer Coordinator, followed by reference checks for successful candidates
- Provision of a current police check (within 90 days) is required from volunteers aged 18+. (We will advise you which check is required when we get to that step)
- Review of our general volunteering policies/procedures and completion of accessibility training before your first day.

Please note that we are unable to provide Community Service hours in support of people facing criminal charges, or that are mandated as a result of criminal, civil, or other legal proceeding.
Types of Volunteering Roles

- Front Desk: answer phones and greet visitors to KSM
- Food Bank (Market) Volunteer: assist clients through various stages of their food bank visit
- Client Delivery Phone Caller: phone our delivery clients to confirm their food orders for the week
- Warehouse: receive deliveries, re-stock our KSM Market (food bank) and help manage our inventory
- Community Delivery – Parcel Packer: pack food parcels for our delivery clients
- Bread Bagging: individual package and display donated bread and baked goods for distribution
- Meals Team: join our Meals Team and help prepare lunches for our clients
- Kids’ Club Snack: help to prepare nutritious snacks for our Kids Clubs and Youth programs during the school year, getting to know the children and youth in the process
- Community Delivery Driver: using your own car, deliver parcels to clients who are unable to attend our KSM market in person.
- Volunteer Drivers – Donation Pickups: using your own car, pick up food drive donations from local organizations and transport them to KSM
- KSM Van Drivers: use our van to pick up inventory or larger scale donations from local organizations, transporting them to KSM
- Kids’ Club Walking Buddy: help to safely transport children from a local school to KSM throughout the school year
- Tutor: help the children in our Tutoring program with Math, English
- Kids’ Club/Youth Program Support: interact with kids as they participate in our programming, help set-up and clean-up for the event
- Family Night Activity Volunteer: assist with children sports, games, crafts and other activities on Monday nights.
